Ran into this hella deep report on the fraud perpetrated by the Prudue corporation concerning their extremely addictive narcotic known as Oxycontin. After reading this, its 0 surprise that many of its users end up junkies. For those who are uninformed on its chemical aspects, Oxycontin is just a semi-reformulated version of the opiate oxycodone, for the purpose of extending its period of pain relief from 6 hours to 12 hours. As it turns out, 12 hours was a complete over-estimation of its potential analgesic effects, leading to doctors prescribing a pain killer to be taken at 12 hour intervals, but only offering 6-8 hours respectively. Thus ending with untold patients begging their doctors for answers and relief, while the pharmaceutical group Prudue covers things up with FDA cooperation.

It goes way beyond that, need to read the article. Prudue's actions basically ensured its users a life of hell. That's on top of their actions of handing it out like candy; when it comes to painkillers of this degree, its implied that all other options have been exhausted and the medical case has little to no chance of improvement. (ie. cancer pain)
